How MSPs can embrace the mindset of “heightened state of cybersecurity” and manage multiple layers of security.

Firstly, a huge “thank you!” to the MSPs of the world for being on the frontlines in this pandemic. You’ve enabled healthcare, education, and businesses to continue operations and keeping us connected to each other when we need it the most. We could say that MSPs are more vital to the survival of SMBs today than ever before.

As we have seen lately, many state and local governments are implementing mandatory stay-at-home edicts for millions of people across the world. This is forcing a vast amount of businesses everywhere to adapt to a new landscape of how day-to-day business is transacted. Due to the sudden and swift shift to a remote workforce, hackers have adjusted their sights to target SMBs and remote workers. Malicious actors and hackers know that during these times they will be able to exploit far more unsecured networks, devices, and distracted end users. This doesn’t need to be the case: counsel your clients on the importance of strong cybersecurity posture during these times. For example, I was talking with an MSP customer the other day who is hosting virtual town hall style meetings with clients twice a week to address technology matters during the closures.

Take this into consideration: a recent alert from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned that unpatched VPNs and remote employees were primary targets as hackers were actively searching for exposed and vulnerable networks.

“As organizations elect to implement telework, CISA encourages organizations to adopt a heightened state of cybersecurity.” – DHS, CISA

The CISA report goes on to urge businesses to stay alert and consider that malicious cyber actors will be using this time of global distraction to increase phishing email attacks. The attacks will target remote workers in an effort to steal usernames/passwords and potentially install ransomware.

Right now, all MSPs should embrace the mindset of “heightened state of cybersecurity” as mentioned above. Particularly as your clients scramble to get situated into a new work environment, cybersecurity should remain keystone to daily business regarding telework. Stress the importance of a comprehensive layered cybersecurity solution secures endpoints, networks, mobile devices, and end users to decrease the attack surface that will otherwise exist from using personal devices and unsecured networks. Hackers utilize every tool available to them to attack, and so should SMBs.
